Abstract The climate crisis disproportionately affects those who have contributed the least to it and lack the means to respond effectively. To address this, cities, as key population centers and economic hubs, are pivotal in driving a just transition to a low-carbon, sustainable economy. However, cities face substantial barriers to accessing the necessary finance for these initiatives. This two-page summary, directed towards policymakers and urban practitioners, examines the key obstacles to funding a just transition in urban areas, based on an analysis of 63 funding sources. Despite the growing availability of funds for climate action and social protection, only a small fraction of these are accessible to cities. Structural challenges, such as the misalignment of national policies with just transition goals, limited project readiness, and a lack of tailored financial mechanisms for local governments, impede cities' ability to secure adequate resources. The summary offers actionable recommendations for improving cities' access to just transition finance. These include integrating social protection and climate goals into national and international strategies, enhancing local governments' capacities, and developing innovative, city-specific financial strategies.
