It was selected as a promising case as it offers valuable insights into the factors and forces that drove a country to affirm gender equality and reproductive rights, especially the right to safe abortion, during a radical political transition. Based on analyses of in-depth interviews and a review of published materials, the case study identifies the actors and contextual factors that enabled legalisation of abortion in Nepal, the mechanisms supporting and sustaining change, as well as continuing challenges to implementation of the law.
