Author Independent Expert Group Title Statement on Global University Rankings Publication Date 2023-11 Place of Publication Kuala Lumpur Publisher UNU International Institute for Global Health Pages 12 Language eng Abstract Universities are crucial organisations for our modern times, playing a key role in the delivery of education and training. However, the rise in influence of global university rankings over the past two decades has promoted a number of perverse and harmful behaviours which produce systemic long-term negative effects in higher education. With the aim of promoting equitable and improved academic public health education, research, and practice as a global public good, UNU-IIGH convened an independent expert group (IEG) to address the problematic nature and effects of global university rankings. Emerging from several rounds of discussion, this statement from the IEG explains why global university rankings are problematic and puts forward a set of recommendations for change.
