    Abstract This briefing paper describes and critically appraises two of the most prominent global university ranking systems: the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, and the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). It also describes the only subject-specific ranking system for the discipline of public health as well as two new initiatives aimed at ranking universities according to their performance in contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals.
