SrinivasanTitle Forests in Transition: The Role of Research and Higher Education in Developing National Forest Programmes in Countries with Economies in Transition Publication Date 2003 Place of Publication Tokyo Publisher United Nations University Pages 213 Language eng Abstract The collection of papers presented in this volume provides a comprehensive examination of the state-of-the-art of, and the major challenges for, forest research and higher education in countries with economies in transition. It is intended to serve as a basis for analysis of the possibilities and the appropriate mechanisms for incorporating research and education into the framework of forest policy development, in support of the overall development process in those countries. The country reports from the transition states in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia highlight country- and region-specific issues, which are situated in the broader context of forest policy development in both developed and developing parts of Europe and Asia. The presented discussion is intended to assist policy-makers, researchers, education authorities, and other public and private stakeholders in the forestry sector of the countries in transition in identifying potentially useful models and approaches of sustainable forestry development in their respective countries, while forearming them against possible pitfalls in the quest for an appropriate policy framework.
