Abstract This workshop, jointly organized by UNU and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), focused on the issues of integrated land management, particularly soil conservation and basin-level water resource management. The papers included in this volume provide an overview of the desertification problems and the challenges in China and describe in detail the integrated land management activities undertaken. A good comparison of these activities is made in papers devoted to other regions of the world, including those on Ghana, India, Jordan, Kenya, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Tunisia, and Uzbekistan. This volume also include a set of recommendations from the workshop regarding issues relate to integrating land management in dry areas.
