Author Noguchi, Fumiko Book Editor Gartenschlaeger, Uwe Chapter Title The Concept of Education for Sustainable Development in Adult Learning and Education Book Title International Perspectives in Adult Education: Rethinking Adult Learning and Education – Asian Perspectives Publication Date 2019 Place of Publication Bonn, Germany Publisher DVV International Start page 105 End page 114 Language eng Abstract The presence of adult learning and education (ALE) is meagre and adult educators are alienated and excluded in the field of education for sustainable development (ESD), despite their important role for social change. This silence is created by the “common understand- ing of ESD”, which narrows ESD to formal education and schooling activities, and the missing political power to enlarge the common understanding. This paper addresses the risk of uncritical applica- tion of common understanding to ALE and advocates to establish the ESD concept through critical reflection and action based on existing practices from a sustainability perspective.
