Abstract Media play an important role in the way we understand ourselves and the other in the world by symbolically shaping identities, values and social frameworks. Globalization and technological innovations changed the media and contributed for disorientation about what to regulate. While the trend used to encourage the role of states in independent media regulation, they are currently part of the equation but with shared responsibility. It is nowadays more related to characteristics deriving from the theoretical construct of media governance. This paper reviews the concept on media governance and presents a list of characteristics which contribute to our understanding of media regulation in a time when uncertainty and diffuse media practices challenge the role of state media. regulation.
