The relationship between mankind and the oceans has been crucial since prehistoric times, but with population growth, especially in coastal zones, there is a growing threat to the marine environment from land-based activities including industrial waste and municipal sewage, as well as pollution from ships and the excessive exploitation of fish stocks. This publication examines the role and future of our oceans, drawing on evidence from regional and national case studies, and considers approaches that can help mitigate our impact on them and protect marine biodiversity.
