The roles of the local municipalities as well as collaborations with key stakeholders in the local communities are essential in this effort. In July 2021, Setouchi Town in Amami-Oshima located in the south of Japan declared to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2030 to achieve carbon neutrality in the future. This study conducts a survey among local citizens about their perceptions toward the necessary transition toward decarbonization. With respect to the introduction of renewal energy, a majority of the surveyed citizens expressed positive opinions about it, while there are concerns among them toward stable electricity supply, landscape, and noise. In particular, approximately 70% of them have shown positive views to the introduction of wind power generation in the community. On the other hand, many have pointed out the lack of information and financial resources as well as human resources. These issues need to be addressed to move forward decarbonization in the community. UNBIS Thesaurus CLIMATE CHANGE
