    Abstract On 14 August 2021, Haiti was hit by a magnitude 7.2 earthquake with an epicentre in the Canal du Sud (120 km west of the capital, Port-au-Prince). The earthquake killed over 2,200 people and injured more than 12,000. The vulnerability of the Haitian people to such a disaster can be traced back through centuries of colonial exploitation, resource extraction and political instability; displaying very clearly that disasters are byproducts of the societal construction of risk. This technical background report for the 2021/2022 edition of the Interconnected Disaster Risks report analyses the root causes, drivers, impacts and potential solutions for the Haiti earthquake through a forensic analysis of academic literature, media articles and expert interviews.
