UNU-EGOV has initiated a research effort to develop an instrument that assesses the degree of information and services made available online, the clarity in the information disposal, the compliance with legal provisions regarding the content, the interaction between hospitals and society, and technical aspects of hospitals’ webpages. Thus, since 2017, UNU-EGOV has carried out a series of activities, studies, instrument application, discussions, interviews, and expert group meetings with the aim of identifying the relevant indicators and sub-indicators to include in an instrument that could be used to assess the level of maturity of the hospitals’ websites as well as to produce a set of guidelines aimed at improving those websites. The existence of this type of instrument will enable health institutions, particularly hospitals, to carry out a self-assessment, which plays an important role in their internal reflection about their online presence and the role that such a presence can and should play in fulfilling their mission by harnessing the potentialities of information technologies.
